Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day (2010) has proven to be commercially a very successful romantic comedy, taking more than $100 million over the first weekend of its release, which just happened to be the Valentine’s Day weekend, a natural target for romantic movies. Although critics haven’t been as kind to this movie as customers, box office receipts are the key indicator to the producers and, based on a budget of $52 million, the popularity of the film has justified faith in their product.

Clearly influenced in its style and structure by the earlier successful British movie ‘Love Actually’ (2003), which took $247 million world-wide, and the even earlier French movie ‘La Ronde’ (1950), Valentine’s Day owes much to these love story movies but has a modern American slant and some big-name American actors.

This version of the ’roundabout’ has Julia Roberts appearing as Kate, an army captain who meets the newly single Holden (Bradley Cooper) while traveling by air to Los Angeles.

In L.A., Reed (Ashton Kutcher) is a florist and he is excited about the idea of proposing to his girlfriend, Morley (Jessica Alba), who accepts and later changes her mind. Reed’s best friends are Alphonso (George Lopez) and Julia (Jennifer Garner), who didn’t think that Reed and Morley were that well suited.

Julia, meanwhile, is in love with Dr. Harrison (Patrick Dempsey) without realizing that he’s already married. Reed discovers that Harrison has been deceiving her when the doctor orders flowers for both Julia and his wife. Julia plans to secretly surprise Harrison by flying to meet him where he is staying on what he stated was a business trip.

A primary school student of Julia, a young boy named Edison, also orders flowers for his Valentine and he insists that they be delivered – to Julia.

Edison has a babysitter named Grace (Emma Roberts) and she has a boyfriend Alex (Carter Jenkins). They’ve been planning a sexual encounter but things go awry when Grace’s mom sees Alex naked.

Edison’s grandparents, Edgar and Estelle (Hector Elizondo and Shirley MacLaine), are pondering their long marriage and Estelle confesses that she has not always been faithful to Edgar.

Grace has two friends Willy and Felicia (Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift), who are in love.

A professional football player, Sean (Eric Dane), is a closet gay and considering retiring from the sport. His publicist is Kara (Jessica Biel), a friend of Julia’s. Sean recently broke up with Holden.

Valentine’s Day has numerous entwined relationships, many of whom are, or have been, romantically involved. Of course, the story doesn’t end there and the final stages of the movie are about resolving the difficulties and deciding who is really important to the characters involved. The major figures are readily identifiable to viewers and their plights are followed with keen interest.

A Review of 2012 The Movie:

* End of the world – 2012 marks the end of the world as people have known it, not the end of the world literally.
* 2012 is also not literal – however 12.21.2012 is a deadline. This deadline marks a time when old behaviors will finally come to a majority end. The pain will have gone on too long and people will finally be convinced that their old patterns are only hurting them and those around them.
* The massive destruction of cities and lives – marks a total breakdown of the old structures and ways of thinking and doing things.
* John Cusack – portrays a person who is lost in a pre-2012 world and empowered in a post-2012 world. Values will no longer be based on your bank account, but based on your deeds.
* People are still living, acting and thinking in a pre-2012 world – anyone who seems lost or crazy right now, like John Cusack or Woody Harrelson represent people who ‘normal people’ need to take a second look at. Ask yourself, "what you are missing?"
* There is no place to run – everything and everyone is in this together. It’s about paying attention, stopping the self-centeredness, learning to love and help one another and be part of the solution before it becomes urgent.
* The constant cracking of the earth throughout the movie – suggests the breakdown of any stability in people’s lives. This has been happening for many years now with the breakdown of the global economy. In addition to finances, this is also showing up in personal relationships, the need for purpose in people’s work and what is important in every small and large way.
* Holding on to your past possessions and behaviors is not a choice – if it is a struggle and makes you act out in the old ways then it is not sustainable. Let it go (empty the cup) so you make room for the natural flow of things. Once you willingly do this it will not be long before you see ‘the new’ flow in. This ‘new’ will be the result of trusting, a free-fall from the previous pain and suffering of holding on to unsustainable patterns.

Conclusion: These are all symbolic messages describing the urgent need to shift our priorities and values. A need to let go of everything in order to begin to ‘get it right’.

Even Mother Nature has had its ‘I’ve had it day’ with all the abuse and imbalances. Ultimately it will be Mother Nature that forces these changes. Most of mankind will get pushed through the door, rather than willingly walk though. Getting pushed happens when you have waited too long. Willingly walking through those doors happens long before the urgency and those that willingly walk through are part of the solution when everything falls apart. Those of you that walked though willingly years ago have been ridiculed as being a weirdo, a kook, a freak or even being negative. Maybe this lonely journey has at times made you feel like ‘they’ the so-called ‘normal people’ were right all along. But the "movie" hasn’t played out yet so who knows?

To some, this ‘2012 The Movie’ will seem a perfect interpretation by the time 12.21.2012 is here. There will be those who never thought that this type of change could happen in their lifetime. To others, this ‘2012 The Movie’ will be a host of symbolic descriptions on how different this world and world behavior will be after 12.21.2012.

For those who have walked through the door willingly, they have already planned for the worst and hope for the best. Those that are waiting to get pushed have not planned at all. They cannot imagine that the worst could ever happen… it is just not an option.

The Lovely Bones Movie Review

BOTTOM LINE: Peter Jackson has fashioned a tragic, beautiful and unsettling story in "The Lovely Bones", with an unusual narrative which follows the aftermath of the murder of a 14-year old girl at the hands of a serial killer, with a stunning performance by Saoirse Ronan.

THE GOOD: Based on the book by Alice Sebold, "The Lovely Bones" sees director Peter Jackson enter a more independent film mode, but he manages to combine that with his big-screen story telling sensibilities to perfection. 14-year old Susie Salmon (Saorise Ronan) is kidnapped and brutally murdered by serial killer George Harvey (Stanley Tucci), the neighbour from across the road. Susie becomes caught in the world between heaven and earth, no longer living but still in touch with her family and the killer her haunts her new existence. Back on Earth, her family is torn apart by their grief and her father’s (Mark Wahlberg) search for the killer. "The Lovely Bones" is a unique film experience, taking us on a journey through the after-life, while at the same time, taking us through the pain and anguish of a family losing a child. Somehow Peter Jackson manages to give all of this a hauntingly beautiful quality, particularly in the sequences where we see Susie in the after life. There is also room for menace and foreboding, with Stanley Tucci giving an incredibly creepy performance as the serial killer. The film is not what you might expect, and plugs in to an idea that the universe and destiny will make everything right in the end, despite the tragedy. Jackson does a great job with the actors in this film too, but his real find was Saoirse Ronan who gives a wonderful performance as Susie. Jackson uses her character to create moments of joy, wonder and anger, with one stand out sequence, that will send chills down your spine, occurring when Susie realises that she is dead and she comes face to face with her killer. "The Lovely Bones" is an unusual yet engrossing film, and well worth watching on the big screen.

THE BAD: This will entirely depend on your taste, but the film does not give you that thorough sense of closure that you might expect from what is in effect a murder-mystery tale. The bad guy does get his justice, but not in the way that you might want or imagine, given that he dies through an accident with the family never knowing that he was the killer. That death itself is almost absurd in that his tumbling and crashing down a cliff was obviously put in to make you feel satisfied that this evil man got a painful death, but one wonders how much better it would have been if Jackson had been allowed to leave it as he originally intended with the subtle shot of him disappearing off the edge. Despite the stunning cast, there is one mis-judgment in that Mark Wahlberg does not quite fit in to the ensemble. It could be that the material does not suit his style, but whenever he shows up, something feels off. "The Lovely Bones" is more like a poem about life, destiny and the universe rather than a narrative, and if this is not your thing, then you may not like the film.

A very, very strange movie. And it surely holds your attention. With Denzel Washington doing lots of super-heroic hand-to-hand against awful baddies, how could it be otherwise?

"The Book of Eli" offers yet another post-apocalyptic scenario, this one apparently happening after, we’re told, a great hole, a "Flash," opened in the sky during a war, called a Solara. It scorched the planet.

What comes of that event? A desert world, of course. And the film really does not try to be that different from the Road Warrior offerings except that there are no car chases. The only trick is that both hero and villain are being motivated and led by, of all things, the Bible. Whether the film will be approved or denounced by good Christians is anybody’s guess. The obligatory cruelty and sadism are there, of course, and one does feel encumbered by a distinct lack of imagination. That is, until the ending. In that, there is some sign of sense and plausibility.

Some. Bleak in its lack of any sign of a comic touch, with a relentlessly barren, choking texture of desert dust in its motif of sepia-toned visuals — almost black-and-white in many parts — we feel starved for some variation, some punctuation in the somberness, some nuance.

Still, Denzel does it as far as charismatic performance, and you can probably live with that, even as you wait for some real statement on how humans corrupt the sentiments and sublime messages of the Good Book.

Almost fatal for the film, in the final analysis, is its innumerable instances which leave you with the question, "Yeah, but how?… what?… where?" In other words, its unanswered improbabilites and contradictions are more than discomforting. Yet, amazingly, the suspense factor is quite commanding, the film, the predator-prey situations being exceptionally well set up.

So this is Eli, a mysterious wanderer for 30 years across the barren dead earth landscapes after the great Destruction. Donned, as required for this film genre, in sunglasses and knapsack, he also carries a fearsome blade — and the world’s only remaining Bible. A voice has commanded Eli to go forth West with the Bible and he will see his way to the basis for a new Earth.

The roads upon which he travels are replete with the remnants of a destroyed civilization that had existed before the Flash, which, we’re to understand, were because of the war.

We’ll be shortly be treated to Eli’s hand-to-hand combat prowess as he encounters cannibalistic barbarian marauders who are fools enough to attack him. With his (it seems) somewhat supernatural powers and his blazing blade, he makes short work of all of them but one. It may be assumed that the Book helped him in this.

The single survivor inquires as to where he’s headed. He says, "West." That’s it. Across the landscape are the untended bodies over the 30 years. No attempt has been made by anyone to rebuild a semblance of civilization.

But that’s good enough to get him to a desolate emptiness which may have been a town at one time. In a deserted hotel behind a desk, bodyguarded by a tall bald hombre and an ornery-looking runt, sits Carnegie (Gary Oldman). He appears fascinated in reading a biography of Benito Mussolini.

Carnegie is a ruler by the intellect. All of those around him are stupid. But he knows the water source, something which keeps him in power. It happens that his primary quest over the years has been — a Bible. There are in fact but a few survivors who remember how things were before the apocalypse. But there exists a belief that religion was the cause of it all, particularly an effort to destroy the Bible. Carnegie believes he can attain supreme power only by finding the Word.

Carnegie sees that Eli has it. He demands it. Eli refuses. Carnegie sics his thugs on him. Big mistake. Now the two are mortal enemies. Carnegie’s ragtag little army, in their jerry-rigged vehicles, chase after Eli. Also an object of this same pursuit is a babe, Solara (Mila Kunis), who was named after the great event. She’s Carnegie’s stepdaughter, and here’s her chance to escape.

They find refuge in the remote house of an elderly couple (Michael Gambon and Frances de la Tour) who serve them tea and play records on an ancient Victrola (the only hint of a humorous moment in the film).

Carnegie remains frustrated, not helping his situation with his blind wife (Jennifer Beals) whom he abuses. His head goon, Redridge (Ray Stevenson), had desired Solara all for himself.

The film is a curiosity in what it does and does not do. It’s of equal parts of under-achievement and incredulity.

Alvin and The Chipmunks – The Squeakquel

Created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958, Alvin and the Chipmunks is a five time Grammy Award winning animated music group. The group consisted of three talking chipmunks (Alvin, the mischievous trouble maker, Simon, the smart one with glasses and Theodore, the chubby sweetheart). In the past, the chipmunks were shown as cartoons and now they are shown in a full length movie as anthropomorphic chipmunks.

The movie begins in a tree farm where the three chipmunks are storing acorns for the winter whilst singing ‘Bad Day’ (by Daniel Powter). Seconds later their tree is cut down and taken to Los Angeles where it is place in the middle of Jett Records recording company and fitted with tinsel and wrapping and Christmas decorations. They abandon the tree and jump into the basket of Dave Seville (who is a songwriter) only to be thrown into a trashcan with the basket.

After escaping from the trashcan and messing up his entire house the chipmunks are discovered and thrown outside. They stand next to the window and sing a song. Dave opens the window and lets them in. He then explains to them that they must sing his song to stay there for the night. Even though they make Dave lose his job and girlfriend, they become the biggest pop sensation the world had ever seen and give Dave his job and his girlfriend back. But shortly after their first performance the record executive Ian Hawke begins to break the family up. Hawke takes the chipmunks on tour not realizing the damage he is doing to their vocal cords. Meanwhile what is Dave doing? And what will happen to his little family?

This movie was one of the funniest I have ever come across and I would love to see it again and again.

The Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

The new Sherlock Holmes movie is set for a Christmas release in the US and any where from a December 24th to an April 3rd depending on what part of the world you live in. The movie, simply titled Sherlock Holmes, stars Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson.

There have been over 200 movies made featuring the infamous detective since he first appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tale, "A Tangled Skein", in 1887. While most have been based on stories written by Conan Doyle, there have been a number that used his characters, but created new stories for the movies. Such is the case with the latest movie, while inspired by the classic tales, it is a story that gives us a vigorous new portrayal of Conan Doyle’s renowned characters.

Acclaimed director, Guy Ritchie has brought to life the as of yet unpublished story penned by Lionel Wigram. Wigram and Ritchie present a Sherlock Holmes never seen before. He is much more physically active than his predecessors and is a master at boxing, martial arts and sword play.

Set in London in the year 1891, the movie has Detective Sherlock Holmes and his resolute partner Dr. Watson engaging in a battle of wits and brawn with Lord Blackwood a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England. Blackwood is a dark robbed Satan worshiper responsible for the brutal deaths of at least 5 women with more demonic sacrifices on the horizon.

Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman Holmes says has ever bested him and with whom he maintains a tempestuous relationship. The mysterious nemesis, Lord Blackwood, is played by Michael Strong.

Other cast members include: James Fox as Sir Thomas, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan Watson’s love interest, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, and Hans Matheson as Lord Coward. Bronagh Gallagher as the Palm Reader, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, William Hope as John Standish, William Houston as Constable Clark, Robert Maillet as Dredger, Robert Stone as the Prizefighter, Joe Egan as Big Joe, David Garrick as McMurdo, James A. Stephens as Captain Philips and Terry Taplin as the Groundskeeper.

"Sherlock Holmes" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Elf The Movie

This Christmas, discover your inner elf… At least, that’s the tagline for Elf, one of the funniest films of 2003. Packed with a cast of Hollywood all-star talent, Elf is guaranteed to make you laugh. Buddy (Will Ferrell) is an oversized elf working away at the North Pole. Always wearing a smile, he dwarfs his comrades and never seems able to find his niche in the toy-making arena. Eventually, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) is forced to reveal the truth to Buddy. He’s actually a human. He’s not really an elf at all. The elves love buddy just the same, but Buddy feels the need to strike out on his own and try to find himself – and maybe even his family too…

Scouring the streets of New York City, Buddy must learn the urban rules of life. In due time, he manages to track down his biological father, a successful publishing executive named Walter (James Caan). But despite the prodding of his wife Emily (Mary Steenburgen), Walter is reluctant to start a relationship with the over-eager grown-up child…

In the meantime, Buddy spends his days working at Gimbel’s department store where he stars as a department store Santa’s elf and a Christmas season decorator, creating a magical wonderland that thrills customers and employees alike. Striking up a relationship with fellow employee Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), Buddy’s life is slowly transitioning from elf to human… But will he be able to survive in the big city? Will he be able to rekindle a relationship with his father? Elf thoroughly entertains us while we find out…

With a great cast of writers, Elf manages to keep the laughs rolling throughout the entirety of the film. Although lacking in some areas (it’s not one of the greatest comedies of all-time), Elf is a hilarious movie in its own right. Will Ferrell turns in an amazing performance as Buddy. Like Tom Hanks in Big, he’s actually believable as the innocent man-child roaming the streets of New York City. It’s this farcical innocence that provides Elf with the charm necessary to keep the audience involved in the story beginning to end. Because of its laugh factor, and the surprisingly small number of decent Christmas-themed movies, Elf is a definite must-see film… Check it out this Christmas!

Avatar The Movie

To encapsulate the Avatar Movie by James Cameron, it promises to be one of the most spectacular and thrilling movies that you have ever seen.

And this promise is backed up by the single fact that the guy directing this $400 million plus movie is none other than Mr. Titanic, James Cameron. Now, this man has an impressive pedigree that resulted in billions of dollars of movies over his career.

His latest project is of course, The Avatar movie. I will give you a little taste of this movie but of course I won’t spoil it for you by giving out too much information or revealing the conclusion of the story. That would be mean and it isn’t in me to do that sort of thing!

So to continue…

The year is 2154 and Earth has been mining a faraway, Earth-sized moon that has the unfortunate name of Pandora. And the mineral is called, Unobtainium which is the cure for the energy crisis. This mining operation has be ongoing for 30 years and now is encroaching the region that belongs to the indigenous race of humanoids called the Na’vi. They are about 3 meters tall, have a tail and glow in the dark.

As you can imagine, they are NOT happy about the mining operations but Earth is so worried about them that they send in the gung-ho Marines to subdue them.

Unfortunately, the atmosphere of Pandora is quite toxic to humans and there is new technology called, Avatar program that wires up the human mind to an Avatar "skin" which is made up of human and Na’vi DNA to look exactly like the Na’vi, but controlled by the humans on the ship outside of the world. Sort of like the U.S. military controlling the Predator Drones from their bases on the other side of the planet.

So anyway, our hero by the name of Jake Sully cannot use his legs. And the Avatar program is very appealing to him because he enables him to become a wholly functioning being again, as a Na’vi warrior that the military sends into Pandora to infiltrate the Na’vi tribe.

And of course, Jake’s Avatar is rescued by a beautiful and lithe Na’vi princess by the name of Neytiri. And of course there are complications when Jake falls in love with her.

So what to do?

Well, I certainly won’t spoil it for you! You are definitely going to have to watch the movie. And I don’t think you will be disappointed. There are plots within plots. New technology. Beautiful and fascinating flora and fauna plus some really fierce and dangerous animals on Pandora.

With all that going on, you won’t lose sight of the message of the movie, that Jake is going to have to make a decision to obey his superiors and destroy the Na’vi people or to lead the Na’vi tribe against the intruders that want to pillage and plunder the natural resources of Pandora at little or no cost to themselves.

Another issue with Avatar revolves around the underlying political agenda in the flick. This could have been a simple epic popcorn movie along the lines of 2012.

The Princess and The Frog Movie

Before you see the Disney film The Princess and the Frog, keep this in mind: everything you know about the fairy tale may be wrong.

You may know the story of the Frog Prince: a handsome young prince was innocently minding his own business when, for no apparent reason, an evil witch cursed him and turned him into a particularly ugly little frog. He was doomed to live in this miserable, lowly condition until a princess with a pure, loving heart saw past his ugly exterior and kissed him. Her purity and sweetness would break the evil spell and turn him back into a handsome prince-and the perfect boyfriend for the lucky princess. That’s how the story goes, right?

Wrong.

Pick up Grimm’s Fairy Tales and you’ll read an entirely different version. The true story of the Frog Prince is better still.

You see, the witch in the story wasn’t really evil at all. Her name was Ellspeth, and as she told it in her autobiography Ellspeth’s Book of Shadows, Prince Heinrich wasn’t as innocent as he later claimed. He refused to get out of her path as she walked up the mountain pass, searching for wild witch hazel. To add insult to injury, he called her all kinds of foul names. Ellspeth cursed the ill-tempered young prince for his own good, to teach him a lesson in manners.

When the princess (whose name was Anika) came along, tossing her famous golden ball in the air, and dropped her ball into the bog that Heinrich called home, Heinrich saw it as his golden opportunity to take advantage of Anika. He offered to retrieve her golden ball from the pond, if she’d let stay at the castle. His plan was mooch off Anika and her father the king, while all the while staying warm, moist and comfortable in the royal palace. Anika agreed, but she could only put up with Heinrich’s selfish, greedy ways for so long. When he wanted her to allow his slimy carcass to sleep on her pillow, Anika got disgusted and threw Heinrich face-first into a stone wall. That would have killed an ordinary frog. But in Heinrich’s case, it made him wake up and smell the bogwater. He realized he’d been an awful jerk, and turned back into a prince.

Anika, however, chose not to forgive Heinrich’s thoughtlessness. She and the prince did not get married, and they certainly never lived happily ever after. In fact, after that incident, whenever Anika and Heinrich crossed paths, she was polite but distant to him. He accepted that he was never going to get anywhere with her romantically, though in his later years, he did become rather bitter about the lack of a closer relationship. He’s said to have circulated rumors that the princess was born with webbed toes, which were later corrected through surgery. In fact, webbed toes ran in Heinrich’s family, though he himself did not inherit the gene.

A fascinating variation on the fairy tale is "The Frog Princess" by Barbara G. Walker, from her book Feminist Fairy Tales. In it, a female frog aspires to marry a handsome and kind-hearted prince. She goes to a good fairy of the woods, who agrees to transform her into a human being if she can get the prince to kiss her. The clever frog succeeds, but her success comes at a terrible price. Although the prince and the frog both end of living happily, their happily-ever-after is spent apart. Female frogs, Walker notes in her introduction to the tale, are often larger and stronger than the males of their species. For that reason, the frog makes the perfect symbol of the independent woman who can make it in the world, even without her handsome prince.

A just-plain well-made sports movie with superb audience appeal, charming personalities, a sprightly demeanor and totally entertaining.

"The Blind Side" is Sandra Bullock’s best performance ever. Her sassy and brassy character’s dynamics depend entirely on insightful, professional interpretation and she proves consummately skilled at every line, every nuance and a consistently on-target southern accent.

Director John Lee Hancock seems to perceive, at every moment, the dialogue, body language, story progression, photography and editing to keep his film stepping in a polished lively pace, with gripping, carefully delivered emotions and an unerring sense of audience involvement. It has a refreshing integrity about it, with sharp insights into the present-day South in relation to race matters. One may complain slightly that it could have used more volatile material here and there, but I’m totally satisfied.

Michael Oher was born among 13 siblings in the slums of Memphis, an African-American child from a broken home. He had never known his father who, in fact, was murdered, something which this child learned only after he’d entered high school. His mom was a crack addict, his brothers and sisters soon scattered everywhere. Oher (Quinton Aaron) was destined for NFL stardom. Bodily, he was huge.

Oher (Quinton Aaron), classmate of teenager Collins (Lily Collins), is invited by her mother Leigh Ann Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) to be taken under the wing of their affluent white family, with loving dad Sean (Tim McGraw) and smart-mouthed but football-savvy son SJ (Jae Head). Leigh Ann is a successful interior decorator and dad owns many fast-food eateries.

This is happening in Oher’s senior year at high school. They dedicate themselves to help the very withdrawn Oher rise by his own resources which, at first, do not impress the staff at the well-heeled private school. But the football coach (Ray McKinnon), who’s desperate at this point for some budding game force, gets Oher in as a student. How he’s to learn sophisticated history, literature and writing is another matter, even given over to the dedication of a special private tutor (Kathy Bates).

Oher shows excellent talent as a football player, much to the pride also of the Tuohy family who have a history of football playing. It is determined early on in the relationship that Oher’s psychology includes a profound and very deep desire to protect those about whom he cares. The coach, perfectly aware that in the game of football it’s the left tackle who’s supposed to protect the quarterback from blind side attacks, sees this protection aspect of the physically imposing Oher as invaluable.

Yet how is Oher, with a grade-point averaged of 1.5 (a "D"), going to qualify for the universities whose scouts are coming after him.

More than Quinton Aaron as Michael, Sandra Bullock throws herself into this role with a driving perfection. Her Leigh Ann’s feisty, no-nonsense energy proves to be an audience-captivating generator of appreciative emotional attachment.

With not even a hint of a dull moment anywhere, and lots of chuckle-worthy encounters, allowing only a carefully parceled sentimentalism, I’ll recommend this as one of the most engaging little dramas of the year.
