Movie Review: Limitless, in a

Limited Way

Limitless could have been the ultimate boy’s film. That is if you keep its audacious premise in mind–pop a pill and become smart. But Neil Burger’s adaptation of a 2001 novel doesn’t really go the whole hog; in spite of that Limitless is a pretty decent ‘techno-thriller’ ride.

Limitless Story

Dumped by Lindy (Abbie Cornish), his steady girlfriend, bummed out writer with a book deal but no words to talk of, Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) has to confront the harsh reality that perhaps nothing will ever change in his life. He bumps into his former brother-in-law, Vernon Gant (Johnny Whitworth), who now ‘works’ for a pharmaceutical company. Over a drink Eddie tells the former pill pusher about his writer’s block that’s bigger than anyone can even imagine; taking pity on him Gant gives him a pill that he promises will change everything.

With nothing left to lose Eddie pops the pill and before he knows it ends up finishing his book overnight. Surprised by the power of NZT, which makes enables the user to access the dormant 80% of their brain, Eddie wants more and when he lands up Gant’s house he is shocked to see him battered. Gant sends him to run some errands which Eddie happily undertakes for that’s the only he can get more pills. He comes back to find Gant dead but the only thing on his mind is the hidden stash of NZT. He takes off with Gant’s supply and life’s not the same anymore. He becomes ‘smarter’; chucks his writing career to make money in stocks; attracts the attention of millionaire businessman Karl Van Loon (Robert De Niro), who gets him to plan the biggest corporate merger; learn the piano in three days and even gets back with Lindy.

But NZT isn’t without side effects and unable to control his actions under influence at times, Eddie believes that he has killed a woman. To make matters worse his Russian loan shark pal ends up popping a couple of pills and is after him for more; Eddie’s life starts spiraling out of control but he somehow manages to keep the usage at an acceptable level.

Using his skills he makes a fortune for himself and everything is fine till someone steals his pills.

Pitfalls in Limitless

Limitless has a very intriguing premise to say the least but once you are done with the film you scratch your head and think, so someone could use all his brain and this is the best he came up with? Imagine using the otherwise inaccessible 80% of your brain that any regular human being will never use in his or her lifetime and all you do is learn piano, trade stocks and can’t even think of innovative ways to stock your booty!?

So much power and what does Eddie do–trade stocks… if Eddie is the possessor of limitless brain power, and like he says being smart only enhances NZT’s impact, how is that what he gets out of NZT is only a fraction better than his Russian shylock’s enhanced vocabulary post popping NZT?

Final Words on Limitless

Barring a portion right in the middle of the film where Eddie wants to give up NZT and then finally decides to use it in acceptable quantity, Burger maintains the hyper-kinetic pace that does Limitless a great deal of good. Bradley Cooper is very well cast and one can’t thank the heavens enough for his presence as opposed to the original choice of the Shia LaBeouf. Cooper tries a great deal, even manages, to convince us of his vulnerability but like Will Smith doesn’t look a loser even when he’s playing a convincingly portraying one, Cooper and his blue eyes are never as troubled. This is also a film where Robert De Niro doesn’t look bored or working for just a paycheck; he and Cooper make an odd couple but credible nevertheless.

Even though Limitless is fairly engrossing, it rarely scratches beneath the surface and often shies away from its own potential. The more you enjoy Limitless, the more you lament the lack of darker and perhaps even perverse turns the script could have employed. Limitless could have benefited a great deal from a small dose of macabre but it ends up running only half the distance; which isn’t all that bad- imagine if LaBeouf was unleashing his 100% brain!

Narnia The Voyage Of the Dawn

Background

“The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is a sequel to “Prince Caspian”, taking place a few years after the events in the prior book. It is structured around a sea voyage of young King Caspian to the easternmost reaches of his realm.

Once again, magic pulls Edmund and Lucy into the world of Narnia, though this time their older siblings Peter and Susan are absent (having become too old for Narnia, it seems). Instead, they are joined by their cousin Eustace, a thoroughly disagreeable character, who will undergo a major change during this book.

The journey of the ship “Dawn Treader” to a group of islands in the East advances the plot. On each island, the companions encounter new dangers and temptations, be it slave traders, a greedy dragon or a well containing secret and evil magic. As they progress, they also find traces of the seven Narnian lords who traveled to the islands in the time of Miraz, who had usurped the throne during Caspian’s youth.

Another quest is that of Reepicheep, the corageous mouse, who follows a prophecy made at his birth that he would reach the true East and find Aslan’s country. And indeed, he will eventually find the edge of the world… and Aslan, of course.

While “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” contains memorable scenes, such as the attack of a giant sea serpent on the ship, or the description of the eerie Island of Dreams, it feels rather slight compared to the earlier novels. It mainly serves as a transitional book between the early and the late titles in the Chronicles of Narnia.

A Review

The latest in the Chronicles Of Narnia film franchise hits cinemas late 2010. Based on the book Voyage Of the Dawn Treader, the third in the Narnia series to be written by CS Lewis, this film promises to be one of the best of the series so far. If you or your children want to enjoy the experience of the movie over and over again before it hits DVD then try these resources.

The first port of call (excuse the pun!) would be the book itself. There are a number of editions of Voyage Of the Dawn Treader, from simple mass market paperback editions to limited edition collector’s items. With the release of the film there is a new paperback release with a photograph of the Dawn Treader ship on the cover. Also of note it the re release of Inside the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, a commentary of the book by Devin Brown which would make a great read to get the most out of the original source book and the film.

For other ways to get absorbed in the story, you can try the Voyage Of the Dawn Treader Radio Play audio performance from Focus On The Family. This play goes for almost four hours and features different actors performing each of the book’s characters as well as an original score and sound effects, so you really feel like you are listening to the story in your head. It is great to listen to with kids or even by yourself with earphones on to get the best effect and is available either on CD or download.

If you are into music then the soundtrack the soundtrack to the film is amazingly effective at bringing the feel of the film home. Listening to the score in the order presented in the film allows you to envisage each scene, and feel its unique events and emotions.

Tangled

The Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, CA, recently hosted a press event for their upcoming movie, TANGLED. Having been around the name “Disney” from such an early age and having so much of it influence my life to this day, it was truly an honor and an experience of a lifetime to attend a behind the scenes look at Disney’s new animated film.

Walt Disney had wanted to create the Rapunzel story back in the 1940s, but the studio never got around to it. The time had finally come and the right team of 50+ animators took on the task of bringing TANGLED to life.

The morning began with the screening of the movie on the Walt Disney studio lot. Before the film began, producer Roy Conli and directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno gave a short introduction. They explained that even though the voices and sound have been finished, the animation was only 60 percent complete. The remaining parts were shown as very rough storyboards or as unfinished CG animation.

For those of us who may have felt that Disney has lost its magic during certain spurts in recent history, seemingly creating movies just for the heck of it, TANGLED is a breath of fresh air. It was very important for Howard and Greno to achieve the timeless feel from past Disney movies created decades ago.

“We love Disney from the 40s and 50s and we looked at what made those movies great. Because we’re making a computer-generated movie, this would all be fresh; it would be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, but it’s still tied into our roots,” Greno said. TANGLED is as close as a computer-generated 3-D film can possibly get to the classic 2-D animated masterpieces that Walt Disney himself helped supervise.

The film was originally slated to be entitled Rapunzel, but as Disney’s story for the film developed, it became clear that the leading male character, Flynn, had an equal part in the storyline. Here’s where the name change to Tangled came in. However, the new title may also bring influence at the box office.

Disney was expecting a higher turnout for The Princess and the Frog, which some may believe can be attributed to the use of the word “princess” in the title, and had deterred male audiences from viewing the movie. Instead of using the female lead’s name as the title, like many other Disney films have done (“Sleeping Beauty”, “Mulan”, “Snow White”, “Mary Poppins”, etc.), hopefully boys and men will realize that it is not a story solely about the girl. Not that a title should ever discourage one from seeing a movie, however; I watched my fair share of Peter Pan, Hercules and Aladdin. Even so, the directors and producers have done a wonderful job in balancing the storyline between the two lead roles.

After the movie screening, the press was split into four groups according to the character on our badges. The groups rotated around the studio experiencing different presentations. My first stop was in the room dedicated to “Character Creation” which included a panel of a handful of animators who each discussed their specific role in the making of TANGLED.

Rapunzel’s 70 foot hair was treated like an actual character. The main belief shared by all the TANGLED animators is that “it’s not JUST hair.” The animators discussed how they had to study physics and the movement of real hair so that it would look completely natural and not robotic in any way.

The second item on the agenda was a small studio tour including the Tangled Production Pod where Conli, Howard and Greno’s offices are located. The common area was themed with some vintage “Sleeping Beauty” and Cinderella artwork from the 50s. Unlike the exotic trips that were taken to Africa in order to gain inspiration for “The Lion King”, the directors and producers took a trip to Anaheim and visited Fantasyland inside Disneyland for creative ideas for this movie.

Tim Mertens, who has previously worked with Howard and Greno on Disney’s “Bolt”, gave a short presentation about the editing process. He explained that he will ask any Disney cast member who has some acting ability, to perform some lines of dialogue called “scratch dialogue.” With this, he can work on the timing and placement of character lines before the actual recording is done.

The third featured area during this time allowed a chance for individuals to break free from their group and have a picture taken in front of a green screen. The printout, which was given to each person who took a photo, featured the character of Flynn. There were also four games set up and those who participated in all four received an authentic lithograph from the movie.

After the activities, the journalists were ushered back to the theater where they had watched the movie earlier in the day. Here, the directors offered many words of praise for the animators who had given so much time and effort to this movie. After a short film dedicated to the animators, Greno and Howard had a surprise for the audience that was not on the schedule: John Lasseter descended the steps to the front of the theater to a round of applause.

The chief creative officer for Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, discussed how this studio has changed over the years after Pixar and Disney merged. They have really worked to make it more of a filmmaker-driven studio said Disney’s head honcho, in contrast to others, which are executive-driven studios. Lasseter said of Tangled, “Even though this is based upon a well-loved tale, this is such a fresh, modern, and contemporary take on it with all the characters and the humor. But with all the humor, we never forget the heart. The hallmark of a film with the name Disney on it — is heart. Walt Disney said, ‘For every laugh, there should be a tear,’ and we really believe that.”

The last few hours of the day at Disney Animation Studios were committed to a lunch hour, a photo date with TANGLED’s leading man Flynn and topped off with the Swag Bag complete with shirt, hat and brush…for ALL that hair!

For its 50th animated feature, Disney has done a tremendous job with TANGLED. The filmmakers and animators have created memorable characters. Rapunzel (who I’m convinced, MUST use anti-breakage shampoo, considering all the stunts her hair pulls) is a sheltered, but enterprising young girl. Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) is the roguish, confident thief (think Renaissance period Aladdin) who befriends Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) by accident. The horse, Maximus, is sure to win over audiences with his hilarious dog-like characteristics. Pascal, Rapunzel’s faithful chameleon sidekick, is an unwavering ally in good times and bad. The villain of the film, the deceitful Mother Gothel, will undoubtedly join the ranks of famous Disney villains like Ursula and Maleficent when TANGLED opens November 24th in Disney Digital 3D.

Harry Potter Deadly Hallows Movie

 J. K. Rowling’s astounding literary skills with the Harry Potter series of books has been transferred to the big screen in a beautiful way. The thrill of seeing the characters on the movie screen has drawn huge fan audiences to see each of the 6 films that have already come out. The concluding tale in the series of seven books will be presented as a two part film, the first of which is scheduled to hit theaters November 19, 2010; the second comes out July 15, 2011. Warner Brothers, the studio making the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie, has also said that the film will be shown in theaters in both 2D and 3D formats.

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie focuses on Harry, Hermoine, and Ron’s quest to find out how Lord Voldemort is able to keep his immortality. The stakes are high, though, because Voldemort and his evil henchmen are hunting for Harry Potter, trying to capture him and bring him to Voldemort. Harry’s life depends on finding Voldemort’s secret to immortality, the Horcruxes. In the process, he finds out about the legend of the Deathly Hallows and the final adventure begins to take shape.

The film studio debated long and hard before they opted to make the last book into two separate movies, but there are several reasons they decided to do so. The sheer length of the book would make it extremely difficult to keep true to the author’s story while still making a normal length movie. Also, since this story brings an end to a seven part epic tale, the characters all deserve to be developed and parted with in a full and detailed way.

January 26, 2009 marked the first day of pre production on the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie. Leavesden Studios, where the other six films were all shot, was again used and filming began there on February 19, 2009. According to the director, David Yates, hand held camera work has been used extensively in order to create a new feel.

Some outdoor sets were used for filming, including London, Swinley Forest, and Freshwater West. June 12, 2010 was the final day of shooting for all of the Harry Potter films and was an emotional day for many crew members, some of whom actually wept.

 Morning Glory

    Rachel McAdams stars as a plucky TV producer in an old-fashioned comedy that respects brains, ambition and, as McAdams’ anchor dubs, her "repellent moxie." The chipper humor is so classic Hollywood that when McAdams gets excited and balls up her fists, the victims of her cheery speeches ask if she’s going to break into song. With a gruff Harrison Ford macho-ing up the screen and a romantic subplot between McAdams and go-to Mr. Perfect Patrick Wilson, Roger Michell (Notting Hill) has directed as good a date movie as you’ll find in theaters today, a time when studios are repeatedly racing their heroines to the bottom of the shame index. (Poor Katherine Heigl.) And Morning Glory‘s good-hearted charm could win it a broader fan base still-—it’s a grower, not an opening weekend juggernaut.

    Every morning, McAdams wakes up at 1:30 am, the time most young singles in the big city are slipping into bed. Fueled by coffee, she charges down to the IBS studios (an unfortunate—deliberate?—acronym) and corrals her Daybreak team to pin down that day’s stories: host Diane Keaton’s On-Air pap smear, a psychic parakeet, Mario Batali’s lasagna. That’s infotainment! And it’s pumping through McAdams’ veins along with what looks like six cups of joe a day. This is also why her enforced new hire—veteran journalist Harrison Ford, a man who once "laid a cool cloth on the forehead of Mother Teresa during a cholera epidemic"—thinks she’s the new plague.

    The fine print in Ford’s contract says he’ll lose $6 million if he refuses to do the network show. Unfortunately, it also says that he can demand a tropical fruit plate in his green room, have final say over TV promos and refuse to do any story he considers demeaning. Which on Daybreak is all of them.

    Ford is hilarious and brooding, deeply wrinkled and deeply intimidating. He’s got the best lines, courtesy of screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna (of the repellent 27 Dresses and the much better The Devil Wears Prada) and his relationship arc with McAdams is more important to the script than her makeouts with Wilson, who plays a story producer Ford calls "Sir Dipshit." As his co-anchor, Diane Keaton kills it in her smaller role as the show’s longtime host, a former Miss Arizona. Channeling her usual mania into a useful purpose, she’s a diva who only breaks out a smile for the camera—she can go from "Screw you!" to "Good morning!" in two seconds.

    I’d like to see McAdams get more gorgeous go-getter roles. Heck, I’d like to see all of young, female Hollywood get decent parts, but at least when McAdams puts on a sensible suit, she doesn’t look like she’s playing dress-up. Her can-do TV exec is smart and capable and, unlike most hapless ingénues, she doesn’t walk into walls. (Though she does bang her head on them on purpose.) Comedies about driven career women stick them in teetering Louboutins and make fun of them when they stumble. For a scene or two, even Morning Glory is guilty of that, but by the end, McAdams lopes gloriously through midtown Manhattan on pink needle-heeled stilettos, just one sharp cookie inviting us to run with her as she chases her dreams.

Megamind

2010 has seen a flurry of kid’s movies at the box office. Most of them like Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 have clicked well with the audience and have done excellent business worldwide. Here is a look at all kid’s movies which are due for release this year and the next.

Megamind is the first movie in the list of soon to be released kid’s movies. Produces by Dream Works Animation, Megamind is an animated comedy which is set to release worldwide on November 5th 2010 in 3D. Directed by Tom McGrath, the movie has voice over’s by Will Ferrel as Megamind, Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchie, Jonah Hill as Titan and Brad Pitt as Metro Man among others. The teaser trailer looks interesting and the movie promises to be a treat for kids.

Tangled is the next movie on the list and it is scheduled for a November 24th 2010 worldwide release. Initially titled Rapunzel, Tangled is produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and will release in 3D. The film will be the 50th animated feature film of the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi have lent their voices for Rapunzel and Flynn Rider respectively. As the initial title suggests, the film is based on Rapunzel, the famous German fairytale by the Brothers Grimm.

Yogi Bear is yet another 3D kid’s movie which is set for a year end release. Distributed by Warner Bros, Yogi Bear is a live action/ CGI film produced by Hanna-Barbera productions. The movie releases on December 17th 2010 and stars Dan Aykroyd as Yogi Bear. Directed by Eric Brevig, the movie is expected to be a good entertainer.

Gulliver’s Travels will be the last of the kid’s movie releasing in 2010. Gulliver’s Travels is an adventure film based on Jonathan Swift’s novel by the same name. Jack Black plays the role of Gulliver while Catherine Tate stars as the queen of Lilliput. The film is directed by Rob Letterman and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The film was initially supposed to have a June 2010 release which was later pushed back to December 22nd 2010. Gulliver’s Travels too will release in 3D, thus promising a treat for the eyes.

Moving on to 2011, Disney recently announced the Phineas and Ferb Disney Channel original movie. The movie is based on the popular TV series Phineas and Ferb and will be aired sometime in June 2011.

This wraps up the list of upcoming kid’s movies. Kids worldwide are sure to have a visual treat in the coming months.

Here we go fancy dress fans, to start getting you into the ‘spirit’ of Halloween, here’s a top 10 list of horror movies… If you were a teenager in the 70s or 80s, you are going to remember them all!!

1. The Exorcist

This 1973 horror film deals with the demonic possession of a young girl and her mother’s desperate plea to get her daughter back through the ancient exorcism rite to rid the devil, which is performed by two priests.

The most profitable horror film of all time, with 10 academy award nominations, it was one of a cycle of demonic child movies produced in the 60s and 70s. The Best Bit? The 12 year old girl shows very strange and unnatural powers including levitation, huge strength along with a strange male demonic voice spewing out obscenities. Loved the bit when her head rotates and projective vomits vile green sludge…

2. Evil Dead

A horror film many of you will remember from the 80s, made famous with its storyline of the five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a remote wooded area who find an audiotape that releases evil spirits. Evil Dead made headlines because of its extremely controversial and graphic terror, violence, and gore!

For its time, it was pretty radical. Stephen King called it ‘the most ferociously original horror movie of the year’! Best Bits? Well… it’s just a continuous pummelling of the audience with one insanely horrific shock effect after the other.

3. Nightmare on Elm Street

Nancy is having horrible nightmares. She discovers so too are her highschool chums, but they are being slaughtered in their sleep by the same hideous character of their shared dreams. Nancy, ignored by the Police has to confront the killer in his shadowy lair…

This movie was made by the master of the horror genre, legend, Wes Craven. Johnny Depp makes an appearance in his first starring role, and Nightmare on Elm Street gives birth to one of the most notorious and infamous undead villains in film history; Freddy Krueger.

Most memorable scary bit… the children singing… "One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, better stay awake. Nine, ten, never sleep again…"

4. Scream

Another of Wes Craven’s blockbusters, the movie scream was hugely popular in the 90′s for its resurrection of the teen slasher movie genre. The plot was apparently inspired by the Halloween movie series and Gainseville Ripper murders of 1990.

The plot of `Scream’ is pretty simple: Halloween costumed knife-wielding psychopathic serial killer is busy stalking high school students and brutally killing them off one by one. The killer’s inordinately obsessed with one of the girls, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who gets involved in the quest to unmask the insane killer Funny Bit? The wassuuuup phone conversation between the killer and three lads.

5. Carrie

The 1976 supernatural horror movie shocked millions of viewers during the 70s, based on the novel ‘Carrie’ by Stephen King. Carrie is the story of a socially outcast teenage girl who discovers she possesses psionic powers which are brought to life when she is angered. After humiliation by her peers, teachers and abusive mother, Carrie turns her supernatural powers on them to devastating tragedy.

Best Bits: The moment the bucket of pig’s blood is tipped over Carrie, who is on stage, who has just been named prom queen… but this is eclipsed by the final moment when the only survivor of the prom, dreams of visiting the plot where Carrie’s house once stood. As she places flowers on the ground, a bloody hand reaches out, grabbing Sue wrist…*shiver*

6. An American Werewolf in London

The 1981 horror-comedy film about two young American men on a backpacking holiday round England, where they eventually find themselves deep into the moors one night and they are attacked by a werewolf. Jack dies and David ends up in a London hospital and is visited in his dreams by the ghostly apparition of his friend who re-appears to tell him that he is now a werewolf and will transform at the next moon. Sure enough he does and goes on a murderous killing spree and awakens to find himself back to normal, but caged at the London zoo.

Best bits – the ever decaying and zombie like corpse Jack returning telling David to kill himself.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This horror film from 1974 introduced the spine chilling character of Leatherface and was originally presented as a true story involving the ambush and murdered of a group of friends by cannibals on a road trip across rural Texas.

The film however is completely fictional, but no less horrifying. This terrifying movie has gained a reputation as one of the most influential horror films in cinematic history, with its portrayal of the killer as a large, hulking, faceless figure whose weapon of choice is a power tool to unleash inexplicable horror on its victims… brrrrr, watch this one during daylight hours with friends…

8. The Shining

Made in 1980, The Shining based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a psychological horror that has become a classic of the horror genre and it has been ranked as one of the best horror films of all time! It’s intensely eerie and powerfully menacing. A writer, his wife and young son head off to care-take an isolated hotel in its off season. The son who is psychic, can see ghosts and predict things from the future or past. Following a ferocious winter storm, the family are barricaded in the hotel and the father becomes influenced by the supernatural presence in the haunted hotel, he descends into insanity and ends trying to kill wife and son.

Memorable Bits; Jack Nicholson’s descent into madness and when he turns against his family… ‘Wendy? Darling? Light of my life, I’m not gonna hurt ya. You didn’t let me finish my sentence. I said, I’m not gonna hurt ya. I’m just going to bash your brains in’

9. The Amityville Horror

This 1979 horror film gained huge popularity with its claim to be based on a true story of the Lutz family and the paranormal disturbances they experienced at 112 Ocean Avenue, a large Dutch colonial house in Amityville. 13 months before the family moved in, Ronald DeFeo, Jr shot and killed 6 members of his family. After only 28 days, the Lutz’s flee the house, having been terrorized by a supernatural presence.

Some of their experiences included; – George waking at 3:15 every morning to inspect the boathouse (the time that Defeo murdered his family) – Kathy having vivid nightmares about the murders and a feeling of being embraced in a loving manner by an unseen person. – The red room, a room painted in blood that did show up on the houses blueprints. – The image of a demon in the fireplace, which his head half blown off – Strange smells of excrement and perfume in random rooms of the house. – Missy’s imaginary friend, a demonic pig-like creature with glowing red eyes. – Slamming doors and German marching bands were heard by George. – Kathy levitating off the bed and receiving red welts on her chest. – Green slime oozing from the walls and plagues of flies – George received bite marks from a four foot high ornamental china lion.

A terrific horror film and the book is even better… don’t be scared if you start waking at 3:15am…

10. Night of the living Dead

This 1968 black and white movie is the first and original zombie movie that sets the bar for all other zombie laden gore-fests. It follows the story of 7 folks who are trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania. It’s a long night of survival as the house is being attacked by mysterious ghouls, the living dead, otherwise known as zombies who swarm around the house in search of living flesh.

The story focuses on the characters weaknesses, their cowardice, their greed and stupidity and makes the drama inside the house as palatable as the danger from outside. The undead zombies are lumbering beasts, they appear unstoppable and relentless in the quest to feast on the living. Most horrifying Bit? A knife-wielding little zombie girl… zombie kids? That will keep you awake all night long.

The Legacy Of Secretariat, A Great Horse

In this article we’re going to review the life and career of one of the greatest horses in horse racing history, Secretariat.

If you were around in the early 70s, regardless of whether you were into horse racing or not, you knew who Secretariat was. His name was plastered all over every newspaper in the world. There had never been a horse like him before and will probably never be another one like him again.

In June of 1973 he came to the Belmont Stakes with the chance to become the first triple crown winner in 25 years. Not only was he on the front page of every newspaper, but he was also on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. This is something that had never happened before or since.

Writers from all over struggled to explain what it was about this horse that was so incredible. In a book written by Marvin Drager, called “The Most Glorious Crown”, the author gathered a number of clips from all round the country with words printed about this magnificent horse. Some of the comments were one of a kind in themselves. For example, Time magazine writer, sports columnist Pete Axthelm, who never saw a horse race in his life said…

“Secretariat generates a crackling tension and excitement wherever he goes. Even in the kind of gray weather that shrouds lesser animals in anonymity, Secretariat’s muscular build identifies him immediately; his glowing reddish coat is a banner of health and rippling power. Magnificent enough at rest … when he accelerates … he produces a breathtaking explosion that leaves novices and hardened horsemen alike convinced that, for one of those moments that seldom occur in any sport, they have witnessed genuine greatness.”

But the glowing words didn’t end there. A columnist for the New York Post by the name of Larry Merchant, who went on to become known as the HBO boxing analyst with the sharp tongue, said…

“Secretariat is the kind of Big Horse that makes grown men weep, even when they are flint-hearted bettors, even when he goes off at 1-10. He is the apparently unflawed hunk of beauty and beast they search for doggedly in the racing charts every day, and never seemed to find. His supporters rhapsodize over him as though he is a four-legged Nureyev, extolling virtues of his musculature, his grace, his urine specimens. If he were to lose the Belmont the 1000 country may turn sullen and mutinous.”

The media explosion over this horse was simply unprecedented. Certainly, horse racing had never seen anything like it before. Even though nothing has quite come close to the furore over this horse, the media did finally understand and recognize when something of this nature was to be looked out for. That’s why in 2003, when Funny Cide was about to make a bid for triple crown glory, the media came out in droves.

In no way are the stories of Secretariat and Funny Cide alike. One was royalty and one was just an everyday horse. But that’s what makes headlines, when an everyday horse can actually challenge royalty. It certainly does make for great theater.

Net Movie Downloads Presents …

The Expendables

The Expendables is an action-war film written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone. It has an all-star cast of action stars on top of that including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie centers on a mercenary group led by Stallone’s character (Barney Ross). Statham (Lee Christmas) plays his second in command and best friend.

The team is contacted about a mission to a small island to assassinate a dictator. While on recon on the island, the team finds an ex-CIA operative behind the scenes pulling the dictator’s strings. At first, Stallone’s character declines the job. They decide to finally accept it because of a woman they met while scouting out the dictator’s forces and layout of the island.

Due to the line-up of actors and the previews I did not expect much in the way of acting and plot in this movie. The acting and dialog were about what I expected, overly campy and cheesy. The most interesting character, as far as dialogue goes, was Jet Li’s character. He was constantly complaining that things were harder for him because he was smaller than the rest of the members of the team. There was attempts at humor from the other characters. However, the dialogue written for them was just not very good. Also, they were not quite over the top enough to drop back into the realm of funny.

A movie like this, obviously, cannot rest on its acting to pull it along. Instead, it must rely upon its action sequences. I went into this movie expecting great fight scenes, explosions, and general mayhem. I was disappointed. The hand to hand fights were incredible. Even though Stallone is past his Rambo prime, he performed quite well in these fights. The rest of the characters were also quite amazing. The fight that promised the most was between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Randy Couture. These two professional fighters went at it and it was incredible, unfortunately, this fight did not last very long.

Where the action fell short was whenever shooting guns or explosions were involved. When most of the actors were firing their guns they did it in such a way so to look cheesy and fake. The exception to this was Statham and Couture; they performed admirably in this area. Stallone was by far the worst at shooting his gun; he always seemed to be randomly waving his gun around in the direction of the bad guys. The smaller explosions were decent, but the bigger ones were CG, and horrible CG at that.

This movie was not the worst movie I have seen, but it was not very good. I was not expecting much going into it, but it did not even reach my very low bar I had set. This movie promised me great action and explosions and did not deliver. The acting was a tad bit worse than I was expecting. The brief scene with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger was pretty funny, but all too brief. It’s Geektime gives The Expendables movie a disappointed 4 on the d10 of explosions.
